Lori Bowen Ayre, MLIS

In 2000, Lori Ayre left her Director of Technology job behind to provide technology guidance to the institution she so valued – the public library. She started up a consulting business called The Galecia Group.
As a national consultant, Lori has worked with a wide variety of city and county libraries as well as consortia and other organizations that support libraries. She specializes in open source software, materials handling technology, RFID, delivery systems, resource sharing, Internet filters, public access computing, and emerging technologies..
Her experience as a manager of people and technology provided her with an appreciation for the effect of change on people, and when and how to select and introduce technology to yield the best results.
She has written pieces for ALA publications including Library Technology Reports (ALA Techsource, 2004) and the Whole Library Handbook 4 (ALA Editions, 2006), and contributed a chapter to RFID-Applications, Security and Privacy (Addison Wesley, 2005). She also contributed “Fulfillment-Direct Delivery of Library Material,” a chapter in Moving Materials: Physical Delivery in Libraries (ALA Editions, 2009) and is a blogger at TechEssence.
Ms. Ayre is currently focused on moving libraries forward in the areas of open source, resource sharing, delivery, and materials handling. She is committed to a future where libraries are the “Discover and Get Place” – both online and in their physical spaces; where library workers contribute to the development of their own software; and users and workers enjoy library spaces designed for 21st Century technology as well as 21st Century users.
