What happens when you put unleaded in your diesel truck?

I had quite an adventure this weekend. While returning home from the fabulous Whoa Nellie Deli at the corner of Highway 395 and 120, my wonderful Chevy 2500HD Diesel truck developed a "knock."

I remember hearing about bad gas causing "knocks." There were commercials about it but I'd never experienced it.

One of the folks in my truck thought it was acting like it wasn't operating on all of its cylinders.

We stopped to investigate the situation. Turns out, I had put half a tank of unleaded in my already half full tank of diesel. The pump I used to pump in the 'gas' had labelled their unleaded with a green background. Green of course being the international symbol for diesel fuel. That's the best excuse I can make.

So now you know. Unleaded gas in a diesel engine causes "knocking." It also causes "not starting." It also causes "destroyed engine." Or it least it can.

I REALLY REALLY lucked out. My engine was fine despite its ordeal. I only had to have the tank flushed and the fuel filter replaced. Of course, I also had to spend the night in Minden, Nevada where there are more BUSH/CHENEY signs than there are actual people.
